Why are my eyes brown?

A newspaper article has the following to report:

Success lies in the colour of your eyes.
Seriously…so there is one more thing I can attribute my ‘loser’ status to!

Those with blue ones are likely to achieve more in life than their peers, says a study conducted by US scientists.
Do we need to be reminded that we are not Aishwarya Rais?

The tests showed that brown-eyed people had faster reaction time, but those with lighter eyes appeared to be better strategic thinkers.
Hmmm…there is a saying in India that tells people to be weary of people with light coloured eyes

Brown-eyed people succeeded in activities such as football and hockey, but lighter-eyed participants proved to be more successful in activities that required skills in time structuring and planning
That is probably why we Indians are better at labour rich tasks and there are fewer managers among us

“It is just observed, rather than explained,” she said. “There’s no scientific answer yet.” Bedfordshire University senior psychology lecturer Tony Fallone, who has also studied eye colour, believed that it should be taken more seriously as an indicator of personality and ability. Blue-eyed academic successes include Stephen Hawking and Marie Curie who twice won the Nobel prize, for physics and chemistry.
Hey! What’s Amartya Sen’s eye colour?

  1. Ahh…the age-old confusion between correlation and causation. Did the so called successful people achieve success because of their blue eyes?
Or, if it is a trend, only a correlation, then it means that nobody with African or Mongoloid descent would ever be as successful as Caucasians and a majority of South East Asians and quite a few Latin Americans have to consign themselves to the history of also-rans.

Eye colour is rooted in evolution and environment. Our ancestors walked the plains of Africa and over the years (hundreds of thousands) and their eye colour, skin colour etc. changed to adapt to the surroundings in a complex mixture of reaction to environment and probably partner preferences. In a word, this research seems to be: Bullshit.
Oh and by the way, the jury is still out about Ash’s eye colour. My careful observations make me think they are green, you say they are blue, while Gulzar thinks they are black. But then, Gulzar also thinks that laughing is good for growing crops, so…

  2. hey Nandan,
U still haven’t changed …that was a pretty long n strong lecture on correlation vs causation :)….
and lavanya, u can be happy at the fact that amartya sen does have brown eyes..
p.s. If it comforts u, one of the all time greatest rock and roll songs is “Brown-Eyed Girl” by Van Morrisson….;)
